30 DAYS OF THANKSGIVING

Day Twenty Two... A kitchen.  To have the ability to cook for friends and celebrate what has been done is a gift.

Day Twenty Three... Thanksgiving.  What a lovely holiday.  I'm so glad our country celebrates it.

Day Twenty Four... Dear friends.

Day Twenty Five.... Thanksgiving break.  Because I should be able to be thankful for such a beautiful thing as that twice in one month.  Oh, thanksgiving break.

Day Twenty Six... Christmas music.  (Okay just kidding.  the JB Christmas album is what I meant.  You can unfollow me if you wish.

I can't believe I forgot about it.

November 11th, 2011 was the day our other baby was supposed to be born.  (If you're new around here, you can read more about that here and here and here.)

I'm not going to go into the details of that here, but what I can tell you is that although I was broken hearted it needed to happen.  I am completely and 100% a different person than I was a whole year ago.

A year ago I didn't look at adoption the same way I look at it today.  I didn't see it as a blessing or as a beautiful piece of God's plan for His children's lives.  I didn't know who I was, a year ago.  I didn't know what I had a passion for or how I wanted to go about dealing with that.

It all didn't make sense, at the time.  It really didn't, and I was confused.  I had no idea what God wanted to do in the hearts of my family, but we've all changed.

I remember on one late November night I sat in my bedroom wondering where I would be in a whole year.  I wondered what would have changed.  I wondered how God was going to use us.  I wondered why all this happened and why I had to keep waiting.  But what I didn't realize was that I would have changed completely from the person I was then.

But, I wouldn't trade a single piece of it for anything.  That baby wasn't the one God wanted for us.  That overwhelms me every time I think of it.  It could have been anyone - anyone at all - but no, it's Trey Malachi.  It's not Titus.  I didn't like the idea of that a year ago, but today, it's the best part of my life.

I think November 11 and the things that happened in the month before that date in 2011 is part of what shaped me as a person today.  Today, I know what I want to do with my life.  I'm not running around insane wondering what the heck to do with my life.  I know where I stand on adoption.  I know what my heart called to do.  I know what I love.  And it's all because of what happened before November 11, 2011.

Overwhelm.  It's the feeling I get when I think of this whole thing.  How in the world did I get Trey as my brother?!  It doesn't make any sense, and I mean that.  All I know is this:

God worked every single thing out.  Every single thing.  I was a big pile of nothing-feelings and numbness a whole year ago tonight, but I wouldn't trade a single piece of that for anything.  I got to walk through the next couple of months in full awe of Trey's bithmother, because of this experience.  This whole thing is something I'll take to my grave.  Every feeling of it.

Thank you, Jesus, for Trey Malachi.  Thank you for turning November 11, 2011 into a horrible day of sadness for my family.  Thank you for everyday we all waited.  Thank you for his birthmother.  Thank you for the way he smiles and the joy he brings.  He could have been anyone... literally anyone... but he's not.  He was chosen just for my family.  And that doesn't make any sense.

I am grateful tonight for Trey and for his story.  Every step of it.  It was all worth it.

Today...

I'm thankful for Christmas lights.  I know that's ridiculous, but it was 11:15 last night and I wasn't tired yet and I dug these up and oh my goodness, they made me so happy.  They are so lovely.

Also...

The CHRISTmas season has always been my favorite.  Someone pointed out recently that I must have inherited that from my Grandmother.  Her house was my favorite during Christmas.  Miss her, but thankful for photos like these.

Today...

I am thankful for adoption.  I am thankful for the good and the bad parts of it.  I am thankful for birthmothers and their selfless choice to choose and protect life.  I am thankful that each and every one of them choose the hard way over the easy way out.  I am thankful for the unique and beautiful way it creates families and gives orphaned babies hope. But most of all, I am thankful that I was adopted by Jesus and for the heart for adoption God chose specifically for me.  It's such a humbling experience.

Tonight...

I am thankful for photos like these.  I often overlook the real life parts of life.  The ones that will one day be forgotten.  The ones amidst real life messes and the coffee maker.  Tonight, I am thankful for the ability to capture life.  I am thankful that I have the ability to remember, through photographs.  Babies really teach you something, you know.  Everyday is a new day.  Their eagerness to learn and how quickly they realize the little things God gave them.  Like hands and the ability to hold something in it.  It's humbling.

Today...

I am so thankful for this sweet girl.  I'll never ever forget the day she got to come home forever because of God's faithfulness.  Or the day her mom told me she calls me her best friend.  She's the best 8-year-old I know and I lover her a lot.

If there's one thing I've learned being in a big family, it's sacrifice.

Sacrifice.

You know, that thing where you have to give up the stuff you value for other people.

I'll tell you right now that that's not always my favorite part of being in a big family.  In fact, most days, it's not.  Sacrifice is one of the hardest things people have to learn.

Like... maybe I don't get to sleep until 10am.  In fact no, I'm up at 8:15 every morning because of the little voices and laughs and fights going on outside my door.  I'll be honest... that used to really really bother me.  It really did.  I just wanted to sleep a little bit later than usual.  I've just had to learn to let go.

Okay, and maybe I don't get to do or get everything I want.  With four other kids my parents have to take care of, every little thing I want doesn't always happen.  I'll be honest with you again, for a while, I really didn't like that.  I'd look at my friends who got to do the stuff I didn't and it made me upset.  But looking back, it was worth it.  In reality, the world isn't all about you.  My mom used to tell us that the world doesn't revolve around us and what we want to do.  I kind of pushed that aside for a long time, but now, looking back, I see what she meant.

But through all of this, I've learned that sacrifice is one of the best lessons you can learn.  It's like patience in that you have to learn it at some point in your life.  There's no changing that, it's just part of our life here on earth.  Everyone learns it at some point or another, I just got to learn it at a young age.

So today, I'm grateful for sacrifice, and that the Lord chose to teach it to me at such a young age.

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:1-2

(today i'm also grateful for this photo.  it's such a true representation of my life and big family life)
